Carbon Monoxide
Done By: Phyllis Lee (15) 3E1
Sources Of Carbon Monoxide
Natural Causes:
-Volcanoes
-Bushfires
-Forest fires
-Natural gases in coal mines
Man-made Causes:
-Burning of fossil fuels
-Incomplete burning of wood, charcoal, oil, natural gas, propane, paper or plastic, etc (Eg. Charcoal grills, Propane heaters and stoves, Cigarette smoke)
-Exhaust of internal combustion engines (Eg. Vehicles and Lawn mowers)
-Inadequate ventilation in living areas
-Spray paint, solvents, degreasers, and paint removers
Solutions To Formation and Transmission Of Carbon Monoxide:
-Do not operate internal combustion engines in enclosed spaces or indoors. If these equipments are used, there must be plenty of ventilation.
-Use supplied air respirators if internal combustion engines are to be used.
-Cut down on operating internal combustion engines and use it only if it is a must.
-Use carbon monoxide detectors with alarms.
-Do not burn things unnecessarily.
-Use public transport if you need to travel around.
-Use green vehicles (Eg. Hybrid electric vehicle, Personal rapid transit vehicles, Solar vehicles and Wind-powered electric vehicles)
Effects Of Carbon Monoxide:
Human
-Headaches
-Dizziness
-Fatigue
-Nausea
-Breathing difficulties
-Amnesia
-Memory loss
-Personality and behavioral changes
-Loss of consciousness
-Death
Environment
-Increases the amount of other greenhouse gases like methane and tropospheric ozone.
-Contributes to the formation of photochemical smog.

Luckily, carbon monoxide concentrations are both short-lived in the atmosphere and spatially variable.
